Tom first took an interest in wine whilst interning for a wine education and consultancy firm in Beijing from 2016 to 2017. After completing his undergraduate studies, he moved to London and became a sommelier. He held Senior Sommelier and Wine Buyer positions at two Michelin-starred restaurants: long-standing Michelin Guide stalwart Pied-à-Terre, where he ran the beverage programme, and Brett Graham’s The Ledbury. During this time, he gained invaluable exposure to a considerable range of wine styles; this pushed him to deepen his understanding of how great wines come to be and both the people and the places responsible for said greatness. He is particularly passionate about the wines of Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rioja and Jerez.
Deciding later to leave the restaurant floor, Tom gained experience in on-trade sales for a London-based wine importer before working in the international wine and spirits department of a leading auction house from 2020 until 2025. He joined Berry Bros. & Rudd in 2025, where he is the fine wine buyer for the Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan offices. His career has so far given him direct market experience of the UK, the USA, Mainland China and Hong Kong SAR, where he has been based since 2024.
Tom is also multi-lingual. He read Chinese Studies at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge and speaks Mandarin, French, Spanish and basic Cantonese (a work in progress). His wine credentials include the Certified qualification from the Court of Master Sommeliers Europe (2019) and the WSET Diploma in Wine and Spirits (2021).
